Record group 96-228 consists of materials documenting the development of state parks in Michigan, for the years 1920-1921 and 1938-1974. Includes reports, correspondence, accounts and rules and regulations documenting the formation of the state park system by the Michigan Department of Conservation. Includes files of the State Park Commission, which was created in 1919 and operated until 1921. Also includes documentation of the park system as it existed circa 1940-1960, and photographs of the Fayette State Park dedication in 1974.

The 1925 Clark-McNary Act expanded the provisions of 1911 Federal legislation creating the National Forest System (Weeks Law). It made it easier for the United States Department of Agriculture to buy land from those sellers whose property was located within the National Forest System.
